Holiday Highlights

Filed under: Day to Day Stuff — by verdanticity @ 9:38 pm

I’ll try to get around to writing properly about our trip, but in the meantime, hightlights included:

Flying business class; what a huge difference it makes!!! It will be a long time until my mileage balance is sufficient for another business class flight. In the meantime, going back to the back of the bus…past those comfy seats I’ve grown to enjoy will be a struggle. Donations to the jiji and baba business class charity fund will be gratefully accepted.

Fireflies and evening thunderstorms at Rocky Point Beach Bungalows in Sri Lanka.

Sharing a very pretty beach with guests from the neighbouring Aman resort and knowing that they’d paid 10 or 20 times more than we had to sit on the same beach.

Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala.

Yummy yummmy vegetarian Indian food.

Not getting the squirts after 2 and a half weeks in the sub continent.

Going to Takashimaya in Singapore and being transported back to Japan – right down to B2 basement food hall.

Baba has photos over on his blog, so those who know the way…head over there to have a squiz. I’ve no idea what the url is. Sorry.

Oh, I’ve caved in and put my ugly mug on facebook….I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.

Back from holday

Filed under: Day to Day Stuff — by verdanticity @ 4:58 pm

Arrived back at lunchtime today (sunday) despite having enoyed the luxury of a business class almost flat-bed-seat on the overnight flight from Singapore, still sleepy now. Will write about the trip and post some pics over the next couple of days.

Two more sleeps…

Filed under: Day to Day Stuff — by verdanticity @ 6:27 pm

…until I sit at the pointy end of a Singapore airlines plane bound for Singapore then on to Bangalore. Of course the plane geek side of me desperately wanted to fly on the new A380 – especially as we’re going business class on this trip – but it wasn’t to be. I guess seeing as we’re cashing in miles for the flights, we should be grateful just to be on any plane. I’m still going to ring singapore Airlines tomorrow to see if I can sweet-talk someone into changing our flight at the last minute to the earlier morning A380 flight.

Talking of sleep, I had a couple of very vivid dreams earlier in the week in which i was smoking cigarettes. I quit smoking well over a year ago and haven’t had any serious cravings or desire to start again. I googled (as one does) and discovered that there are as many interpretations of what smoking in a dream means as there are google results. They range from phalic fixation (not all that surprising I guess for a poof), to being a positive omen indicating a pending windfall. There are all sorts of negative interpretations as well such as hiding one’s true emotional feelings from others, or wanting to break free from some kind of addiction…..Has any one got a generous pinch of salt?

Rise for dinner

Filed under: Day to Day Stuff — by verdanticity @ 10:21 pm

Baba got a $29(!!) 4 course dinner special tonight for us at Rise in Darlo/Kings X. It’s the second time we’ve been there. Staff are all Japanese, food is Japanese/fusion and even at full price ($60 for 5 or 6 course degustation) is really good value.

The $29 special (obtained by mentioning the Japanese ex-pat/working-holiday kids’ website JAMS) consisted of a plate of three little entrees: Duck confit salad, soft shell crab sush and tuna carpaccio in crispy wanton shell. 2nd course was Japanese-ish pasta with tomato, shitake and flame grilled salmon. The main was braised chicken, wrpped in cabbage leaf severed on cauliflower puree with a red wine and miso sauce. Dessert was two shot glasses of panacotta – one served with citrus shaved ice, the other with frozen espresso and kaluah.

The wine list was nothing much to write home about and service, while well meaning and polite was a bit clumsy (though some nice eye candy).

I Recommend dinner at rise. Fairly sophisticated cuisine at bargain basement prices.
